Sven Thatje is a lecturer in Marine Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Southampton, England. He is interested in how life in extreme environments (polar and deep seas) has evolved and adapted to cope with changes to the environment over long geological periods of time. His work embarks on a multidisciplinary approach by making use of knowledge from various scientific areas ranging from ecology, physiology, to paleobiology, glaciology, and geophysics. The rationale behind this approach is that the ecology and physiology of life in the oceans is the result of past evolutionary experience. Understanding better the evolutionary history of a species if not communities may allow us to assess their capabilities to cope with global climate warming.
